Chapter 19

Another morning where my emotions ran the length of the spectrum. I was quietly thrilled when Jackson introduced me as his assistant. He could have just as easily dismissed me, telling me to leave so he could move along with official business. Letting me stay was a big deal. It also gave me hope that all this would blow over easily. His curt farewell brought me back down to earth. He'd allowed me to stay as payment of sorts for finding the weapon, but that was the end of our partnership on the investigation.

If only Boris Rossdale had been the killer, then the case could be tied up quickly and I could earn credit for finding a major piece of evidence. The murder weapon could have ended up in anyone's hands. The suspect list had just grown to epic proportions. Fortunately, my article on Madison gave me some solid places to start. Veronica Blaine was on the top of my list.

I made myself a cup of hot tea and sat at the table with my laptop. I'd only had a few brief interactions with Veronica, but I already had a good sense of her character. Did that sense lead me to believe she was a murderer? Not necessarily. But she was absolutely someone who got involved in community issues. That led to my next conclusion, one I easily verified by pulling up the neighbor app on my computer. As expected, Veronica Blaine was a frequent poster and commenter. She was not afraid to speak her mind. (I wasn't sure if that was a good or bad quality, but it was definitely a quality.)

It only took a short time perusing past posts to see that Veronica was highly critical of every aspect of Rupert Madison's life. She wrote that the town would someday be consumed by Madison's big dirt movers, leaving behind only paved parking lots and empty shop fronts. One thread had forty comments about problems people were having with their Madison homes. Someone even graciously posted photographic proof of a backed-up toilet, a visual aid I could have done without.

I scrolled through to Veronica's most recent post. She was hosting a community meeting at the recreation center in her neighborhood. The meeting was at two o'clock today. It was going to be easier than I thought to talk to Veronica Blaine. She'd had a nervous, agitated reaction to Rupert's murder. I was interested to find out what her feelings were about the tragedy. Did she consider it a tragedy? Did the homeowners have to drop their lawsuit now that the defendant was dead? They could take on his trust or his company, but that would take an entirely new filing. The homeowners would likely not get results for years, if at all.

"You seem distracted," Edward said.

I didn't look up from the screen. I rarely went on the neighborhood app, but when I did drop by, I always found something interesting. Someone in the next neighborhood over was giving away feed troughs.
